Strength

Lyrics

When I was weak you picked me up
You held me, you healed me
When I felt different and alone
You told me, you showed me

What it means to be strong
What it means to be free
I looked up and saw your Strength

It’s your hands, it’s your mind, it’s your faith
But all the strength you have comes from your heart

In the dark when I was afraid, you turned the light on
And scared away the monsters in my head
Even when I was far away, I held on
To all the things you said like

What it means to be strong
What it means to be free
I looked up and saw your Strength

It’s your hands, it’s your mind, it’s your faith
But all the strength you have comes from your heart

Now my heart feels and believes
The hope and peace you taught me

What it means to be strong
What it means to be free
I looked up and saw my Strength

It’s your hands, it’s your mind, it’s your faith
But all the Strength you have comes from your heart

When I was weak you picked me up
You held me, you healed me
When I felt different and alone
You told me, you showed me
To be me

About the song

I wrote Strength back in June for Father’s Day. I wanted to write something that would remind people of the fathers or father figures in their lives. A lot of different things come to mind when thinking about fathers and the one major characteristic that ties everything together, to me, is strength. But not just physical strength. It takes lots of other things to truly be a strong person. For so long, I felt so different because I didn’t play basketball or football or do the usual things other people in my family did. I felt out of place and shy and weak. But as I have grown older and (hopefully) wiser, I see all the similarities between me and my dad. When I grow up, I really do want to be like my dad because what I have learned through watching him while growing up is that real strength comes from within and is displayed by kindness and compassion for others. And that’s the only strength that matters.
